A 31-year-old Gwinnett County man found himself in the near-freezing Chattahoochee River earlier this week while being pursued by a bail officer, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Ernesto Galvez, 31, was being tracked by a bail officer for failing to appear in court on a traffic violation. (Galvez was also wanted by Gwinnett County sheriff’s deputies for a probation violation.) The bondsman tracked Galvez to a Suwanee home Wednesday in the Chattahoochee Run neighborhood, police told the AJC.
When the bondsman knocked on the front door, Galvez ran out the back and “either jumped or fell into the river and became distressed,” Suwanee police spokesman Capt. Cass Mooney told the paper.
Galvez was seen clinging to a branch in the river at about 2:15 p.m. and was rescued by the Gwinnett County Fire Department.
Suwanee's daily temperature was about 45 degrees, according to the paper. Galvez was taken to a nearby hospital and treated for hypothermia.
