A 49-year-old woman was killed today after the car she was driving went out of control and crashed on Interstate 85 in Opelika, Ala.
Terrie Cherie Reed of LaFayette, Ala., was pronounced dead of multiple injuries by Lee County Coroner Bill Harris.
Reed, who wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, was traveling northbound about 10:37 a.m. CST when the 1995 Chevy Lumina left the roadway and struck the cable median divider. One of the tires on the vehicle may have blown out, causing Reed to lose control.
The vehicle overturned and hurled the woman from the vehicle. The car and the woman’s body stopped in the inside northbound traffic lane.
Northbound traffic was slowed for about two hours while the Opelika Police Department conducted an investigation and cleared the wreckage. No other vehicle was involved in the one-car accident.
Authorities said the accident remains under investigation by the Opelika Police Department and Lee County Coroner’s Office. The fatal wreck is the first traffic fatality in Lee County this year.
