The Russell County Sheriff's Office is treating the death of 19-year-old Keonte Chavis of Phenix City as a homicide, but Sheriff Heath Taylor said on Sunday that he is waiting for an autopsy report.
"We are not sure at this time how she died," Taylor said.
Taylor said the teen's body was found Saturday in the woods on Ridge Road in Seale sometime between 5 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
The body was decomposed.

"We believe it had been out in the elements for about three days," Taylor said.
Taylor said that before the body was found, the Phenix City police had already been searching for Chavis since Thursday.
According to the Phenix City police, she was last seen in the company of a cousin and was dropped off in the area of the the 800 block of 6th street in south Phenix City.
At that time, she was wearing a gray tank top and blue jeans.
