A 1-year-old boy died Sunday in what appeared to be an accidental drowning at West Point Lake, a news release said.
The Troup County Sheriff’s Office said a call was made to 911 at 12:25 p.m. about a possible drowning at Long Cane Access at West Point Lake, located off West Point Road, south of LaGrange, Ga.
The first emergency personnel unit arrived on the scene at 12:28 p.m. and discovered that the 1-year-old’s mother found the child unresponsive in shallow water. CPR and other life-saving measures were attempted.
The child was transported to West Georgia Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 12:56 p.m. The name of the child has not been released. The case is being investigated by the Troup County Sheriff’s Office.
Agencies responding to the scene were the Troup County’s Sheriff’s Office, Troup County Fire Department, Troup County AMR, Georgia Department of Natural Resources and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
The American Red Cross provides some water safety tips:
Never leave a child unattended near water, and do not trust a child’s life to another child. Swim in designated areas supervised by lifeguards.
Have young children or inexperienced swimmers wear U.S. Coast Guard approved life jackets.
Avoid drinking alcohol if around water.
If a child is missing, check the water first.
If you are going to spend a lot of time around water, learn CPR.
