A 13-year-old student reported she was a victim of sexual battery in an Arnold Magnet Academy classroom after she agreed to hug a classmate on Aug. 27, according to a Columbus police report.
The incident happened inside the 2011 51st Street school around 1:50 p.m., according to the report. The victim reported it Tuesday afternoon around 4 p.m.
Muscogee County School District Director of Communications Valerie Fuller said the incident was brought to school officials' attention days later, and administrators are still trying to gather details.
"There was a consensual hug between the two, which is an inappropriate display of affection," Fuller said.

Fuller added that officials have not confirmed if a second inappropriate action occurred, but said the Muscogee County School District Code of Conduct specifies that any contact between two students is considered inappropriate, including hugs.
"Depending on what it is, any inappropriate conduct can lead up to criminal charges or disciplinary actions such as suspension or detention," Fuller said.
Rule 16 of the Code of Conduct specifies that students will be disciplined if they "engage in any form of inappropriate bodily contact or display of affection," but does not specify what is considered inappropriate bodily conduct or mention hugging as a forbidden action.
