More than 100 people gathered Tuesday morning around the apartment complex at 932 Rigdon Road as police investigated Columbus’ first homicide since the second week in January.
Jumunn Morgan, 29, was found dead in his Rigdon Road apartment, said Columbus Police Lt. Consuelo Askew. Late Tuesday, police said Morgan died of a gunshot wound.
Police were called to the scene at 7:58 a.m., after Morgan’s live-in girlfriend found him dead in the bedroom of the apartment they shared, police said.
He was wounded in the torso area and pronounced dead at 8:30 a.m., Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan said. His body was sent to the crime lab for an autopsy.
Officials have not identified any suspects, according to Askew.
The apartment complex at that address is just a few blocks from Carver High School and near the intersection of Rigdon Road and Thomas Street. Officials at Carver said the school was never on lockdown.
An officer was standing in front of Unit 34 of the L-shaped, one-story apartment complex during the investigation. The apartment complex is across the street from St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church.
Around 10 a.m., a large group of people were seen embracing a woman who was crying at the scene. By 11:30 a.m., officials had an Acura towed away as standard procedure.
Morgan was released in June from his fourth stint in prison after he spent over two years there for pleading guilty to distributing marijuana and obstructing police in 2012, according to court documents.
At 17, he pleaded guilty to driving a stolen Jeep Grand Cherokee and fleeing police. His other two incarcerations stem from marijuana and cocaine charges, according to records from the Georgia Department of Corrections.
