Russell County High teen to appear in Juvenile Court on gun charge
A Russell County High School student accused of bringing a gun to the campus Tuesday morning will be in Juvenile Court Thursday to face the charge.
Russell County District Attorney Kenneth Davis said Wednesday the unidentified teen will be in court on the charge of bringing a gun to school. A hearing will determine whether he faces the charge as an adult or juvenile.
Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor said he wants the male student to face the gun charge as an adult. After searching the boy’s locker at school and his room at home, deputies found the .22-caliber revolver hidden at an undisclosed location on the campus.
Taylor said the student’s intentions are one of the issues in the case.
“I think that would be kind of the deciding factor,” the sheriff said. “What was his intentions as to whether they would charge him as an adult or charge him as a juvenile.”
The sheriff’s office has signed a petition to identify the juvenile as delinquent on the gun charge.
Davis has said the student could face a felony charge if tried as an adult. If convicted, the boy could face a possible sentence of one to 10 years in prison.
-As the investigation into the gun continued, Taylor said it doesn’t appear that anyone else was involved. There was some talk about possibly selling the weapon.
--“We are trying to figure out who he was talking to about selling it and go from there,” the sheriff said.
Authorities wouldn’t comment on whether the gun was loaded. It was found wrapped in a black bandanna.
-A day after the school was placed on lockdown for more than an hour, Taylor said no problems were experienced at the school on Wednesday.
- “It was real quiet,” he said. “No problems.”
