Update: Columbus man charged in SunTrust bank robbery

Update: A Columbus man was arrested in connection to the Monday afternoon robbery at the Suntrust Bank on Auburn Avenue.

Victor Cartell Butler, the alleged thief, was apprehended 9:16 a.m. Tuesday in his home in the 900 block of Booker Avenue. He was charged with one count of armed robbery after police determined that he threatened to use a bomb in order to steal from the bank.

Butler, 59, is scheduled for a preliminary hearing 2 p.m. today in Recorder's Court, according to an arrest report.

Original Story: Columbus Police said Monday the SunTrust Bank on Auburn Avenue was robbed around 4:15 p.m.

Police said a black man robbed the bank at 2050 Auburn Ave. and made verbal threats before fleeing the scene on foot. He was last seen heading toward Mercury Drive, police said in a release.

It’s unclear how much money the suspect may have taken.

The man was described as being 5-foot-10 to 6-foot and weighing 180-210 pounds. He was wearing a white shirt and black shorts.

Columbus Police as well as the Federal Bureau of Investigation responded to the scene and are investigating.
