Former NFL player Dantrell Savage among two arrested on meth charges

Former NFL player Dantrell Montganner Savage was one of two men arrested in Columbus Tuesday afternoon on drug-related charges, according to police reports.

Savage, 30, of Columbus was charged with possession of methamphetamine with the intent to distribute and possession of drug-related objects. Jessie James Smith, 50, of Columbus faces the same charges in addition to two counts of selling methamphetamine.

Both men were apprehended 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Savage Fitness Evolution gym on 33rd Street. They were transported to Muscogee County Jail, where they will remain without bond until their preliminary hearing set for 9 a.m. Thursday in Recorder's Court.

Columbus Police said Savage was in possession of two clear plastic bags that collectively contained 28 grams of meth with a street value of $2,800. He also had three digital scales in his possession, officers added.

An arrest report states that Smith was in possession of one clear plastic bag containing 26.2 grams of meth with a street value of $2,620. He also had three digital scales and a glass smoking device in his possession, police said.

According to previous Ledger-Enquirer reports, Savage was signed to the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent out of Oklahoma State. He played with the Chiefs for two seasons, mostly serving on special teams before getting cut in March 2010.

Savage, a Jordan High graduate, was signed to the Carolina Panthers in August 2010 but cut before the 2010-11 season started.
