Second suspect jailed in fatal shooting at 4th Quarter Sports Bar
A second suspect has been jailed in the Oct. 9 shooting death of Dominic Mitchell at the 4th Quarter Sports Bar in Midland, Columbus police said Tuesday.
James Daniel Jr., 36, of Pine Mountain joins Demark Ponder, 47, of LaGrange, as the second arrest in connection with the shooting death of Mitchell. Apprehended in Harris County Tuesday morning,Daniels is scheduled to face murder and armed robbery charges 2 p.m. Friday in Recorder's Court.
Ponder has pleaded not guilty to charges of murder, aggravated assault, armed robbery and possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of a crime. Daniel faces one count of murder and armed robbery, Police Lt. Greg Touchberry said in a release. Daniel is held in Muscogee County Jail for a 2 p.m. hearing Friday in Recorder’s Court.
Police were called about 11:20 p.m. to check on the shooting of multiple victims at 6959 Macon Road. Mitchell was taken to Midtown Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead of two gunshot wounds just before midnight.
Around the same time officers arrived on the scene, Ponder and another injured person appeared in the emergency room at St. Francis Hospital. Ponder, who drove a motorcycle to the hospital, sustained a gunshot wound to his right leg, and the third person was shot in the stomach. That victim was identified in a report six days later as a 49-year-old Columbus man.
At the preliminary hearing for Ponder, police said the investigation was ongoing and more arrests were possible.
Police didn’t state what led to Daniel’s arrest more than a month after the shooting but asked residents with additional information in the shooting to contact Cpl. David Stokes at 706-225-4242 or the Robbery-Assault Unit at 706-653-3400.
Check back for more details as they become available.
