UPDATE: Preliminary hearing for murder suspect in Friday shooting continued
Second update: The preliminary hearing for Roger Lee Thomas, the man accused of murdering his half-brother Friday, was continued until next Wednesday at 9 a.m.
Update: Roger Lee Thomas, 28, surrendered to authorities around 11 p.m. Sunday at the Columbus Public Safety Center on 10th Street, police confirmed.
He was arrested on a felony warrant charging him with murder in connection with the shooting death of 32-year-old Demetrius Williams. Thomas is being held without bond in the Muscogee County Jail, where he will remain until his preliminary hearing set for 9 a.m. Wednesday in Recorder’s Court.
According to police, Attorney Stacey Jackson will represent the suspect.
Williams and Thomas are half-brothers with the same father, according to the victim's wife, Ambria Williams.
Original Story: Columbus police are hunting Roger Lee Thomas with warrants alleging he gunned down Demetrius Williams at Mellon Street and Bernard Drive on Friday night.
Investigators ask anyone with tips on his whereabouts call Cpl. Darrell Middlebrooks at 706-225-4329, the detective office at 706-653-3400, or 911.
Williams, of Phenix City, died at 12:05 a.m. Saturday of multiple gunshot wounds to his side and chest, said Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan.
Lt. Consuelo Askew said police were called to the intersection at 11:17 p.m.
The death left the victim’s mother full of unanswered questions.
LueRaine “Peaches” Williams said her son was not working, but stayed home to babysit some of his four children. He is the father of three girls and a boy, ages 5 months to 8-years old.
“He was trying to get his life together,” said LueRaine Williams. “His wife was working and he was babysitting the babies.”
The mother said she didn’t know anyone who would harm her only son. “He would have gave the shirt off his back,” she said. “He would have gave you anything you wanted.”
She said she last saw him around 10 a.m. at her home. “My sister had just called and asked to speak to him,” the mother said. “I don’t know what she told him. He went over my sister’s house and that is the last time I seen him.”
Williams is the city’s 18th homicide for the year. His death followed the Nov. 24 shooting of Marcus Bowden, 30, in the 2900 block of Cusseta Road. Police have a suspect in that shooting.
