Opelika police investigating shooting death

Police in Opelika, Ala. are investigating the death of a 22-year-old Auburn man.

According to a police report, officers got a call Saturday at approximately 9 p.m. about shots being fired in the 500 block of Raintree Street.

Upon arrival, police found the male victim lying in the yard of a residence. He was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Paramedics from the Opelika Fire Department provided medical care and transported the man to East Alabama Medical Center where he died.

He was pronounced dead at 10:15 p.m. by an emergency room physician.

Lee County Coroner Bill Harris identified the victim as Jacob Austin Smith.

Harris said Smith apparently had multiple gunshot wounds.

Harris said the body is being taken to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences medical examiner's office for a postmortem examination.

The case remains under investigation by Opelika Police, Lee County Coroner's Office and Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences.
