Man found shot to death outside Warren Williams Homes
Columbus police are investigating a shooting after a 44-year-old man was found shot to death outside of an apartment Saturday at Warren Williams Homes, authorities said.
Calvin Denson of Seale, Ala., was pronounced dead at 6:03 p.m. at Midtown Medical Center, said Muscogee County Chief Deputy Coroner Freeman Worley. The body will be transported to the crime lab in Atlanta on Monday for an autopsy.
Police were called to the public housing complex around 5:30 p.m. when patrol officers found the man on the ground outside of the 301 Building of Warren Williams Homes. He appeared to have two gunshot wounds in the chest and one in the leg.
The investigation has been turned over to detectives, Police Capt. William Turner said.
Police Sgt. Lance Deaton was on the scene shortly after officers arrived. Officers were busy looking for witnesses to learn more details in connection with the shooting.
“We are in the early stages of the investigation,” Deaton said.
The victim was found just west of the building located directly behind the Columbus Housing Authority’s office building on Wynnton Road near 10th Avenue.
Police sealed off the area near the apartment building with yellow tape and dotted the parking lot with nearly 40 cones to identify key details in the case. Detectives also inspected two SUVs, a white Chevy and a red Ford Explorer that was parked in the lot.
The deadly shooting comes more than a month after 24-year-old Anthony Meredith was shot dead at the entrance of Peachtree Mall on March 26. Police arrested a suspect and said the shooting was gang-related.
