This year's application period has started for students to transfer within the Muscogee County School District from their assigned school.
The deadline is July 24 at 5 p.m., the district announced in a news release Thursday night. Forms are available at all of the district's schools and the MCSD Central Registration Office, 2960 Macon Road.
To accommodate more school choice, Georgia House Bill 251 has mandated since 2009 the state's public school districts must allow an annual transfer period. Slots are granted through a lottery and only where space is available. Transportation isn't provided. Appeals aren't allowed.
This law doesn't apply to charter schools or schools that have been created in the past four years.
The applications, which are called House Bill 251 Request Forms, should be submitted to the MCSD Division of Student Services in the Muscogee County Public Education Center, 2960 Macon Road.
Parents or guardians who don't know their child's assigned school can find out online at https://locator.muscogee.k12.ga.us/Locator. Assigned schools are based on the legal home address.
MCSD advises high school students who participate in athletics to consider the impact transferring could have on their eligibility under Georgia High School Association rules.
