Fort McPherson ceased operations two years ago, but its commissary, which sells food for up to 30 percent off to both active military personnel and veterans, has remained open -- at least until the end of this month.
On Saturday, the families of several retired personnel gathered to protest the upcoming closure of the McPherson commissary, according to Fox 5. Protestors argue that such a closure will leave many without access to affordable groceries. The nearest commissary will be at Fort Benning, here in Columbus.
A plan to build a commissary at Dobbins Air Force Base in Marietta has been stalled by a lack of funding.
"There is no known date when the commissary will be built on Dobbins and so we don’t know when the groundbreaking will be,” a Dobbins spokesperson told Neighbor Newspapers.
The commissary at Fort McPherson will close on Sept. 28.
