Fort McPherson ceased operations two years ago, but its commissary, which sells food for up to 30 percent off to both active military personnel and veterans, has remained open -- at least until the end of this month.
On Saturday, the families of several retired personnel gathered to protest the upcoming closure of the McPherson commissary, according to Fox 5 . Protestors argue that such a closure will leave many without access to affordable groceries. The nearest commissary will be at Fort Benning, here in Columbus.
A plan to build a commissary at Dobbins Air Force Base in Marietta has been stalled by a lack of funding.
"There is no known date when the commissary will be built on Dobbins and so we don’t know when the groundbreaking will be,” a Dobbins spokesperson told Neighbor Newspapers .
The commissary at Fort McPherson will close on Sept. 28.
