A Fort Benning soldier who died early Saturday at St. Francis Hospital in Columbus after he was stricken during a ruck march has been identified, authorities said Tuesday.
A post spokeswoman identified the soldier as Aurek Shayne Rardin, 20, of Tennessee. He was pronounced dead at 12:37 a.m. in the emergency room at the hospital, Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan said. Bryan said the soldier was on a ruck march when he became ill. He was first taken to Martin Army Hospital where he was revived and later transferred to the hospital in Columbus.
Elsie Jackson, a public affairs spokeswoman, said Rardin was assigned to the 198th Infantry Brigade, a basic training unit at the post. The death remains under investigation.
A ruck march is walking at a fast pace over rough terrain with a certain amount of weight inside a backpack.
Basic training continues at the brigade.
