Bike giveaway program continues despite theft

Chester Jackson, of East Coast Body Shop on Farr Road, gave away 1,000 bikes for Christmas last year despite having some of his bikes stolen. This summer, a youth he was mentoring broke into the shop and stole some money. Jackson is now collecting more bikes for this year’s bike give-away.

Jails are a costly psychiatric solution

A National Press Foundation fellowship program trained 20 journalists on the complexities of covering mental health issues. Dr. Norris Turner, a representative from Johnson & Johnson Health Care Systems, Inc., cited a study conducted by the Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Statistics, which found that 64 percent of local jail inmates, 56 percent of state prison inmates and 45 percent of federal prison inmates had symptoms of mental illness. He said incarceration costs twice as much as preventive measures, yet many people lack access to mental health treatment.
