On the crest of summer, beneath an oak that blossomed green, it's Monday Mail.
Today's opening is from the song "Pieces of April" by Three Dog Night.
Never miss a local story.
April's still a week away, but the spring social calendar's already cranking up. I just got two invitations to events on the same day:
This year's Georgia Cities Week is just around the corner. This year's theme is "People, Place, and Purpose!" and cities across the state of Georgia will be celebrating this special week April 13-19. All 6th graders were invited to participate in a state-wide essay contest, "If I were Mayor, I would." I would like to invite you to judge these essays.
If you are able to participate, an essay packet will be hand delivered to you. As with last year, we have set up a date for you to meet, deliberate and choose the top three winners. The date that we have scheduled is on Thursday, April 10 from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the Learning Center at the Government Center. We will also have lunch catered for you.
I hope that you will consider being a judge again this year.

For a free lunch? Sure!
But I think the essay opening should be "Were I mayor," as in: "Were I mayor, I would get another job because this one doesn't pay enough to cover all the meetings and ceremonies and crazy people calling my office to say UFOs are following them."
But if I have lunch with the essay judges, I won't be hungry for Chef Adrain's syrup tasting that evening at the Venue Restaurant & Tapas Bar in Atlanta. He sends this invitation:
I hope that you find this letter to be appreciative. I invite you to come and cover a highly anticipated launch of Unique Syrups. "Welcome to the World of Unique Syrups" on Thursday, April 10 starting at 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. This is much more than the average "launch party". Attendees will experience luxury syrups with an all natural twist. Additional, you will have the opportunity to give your feedback about the different syrups and have the first opportunity to download Unique Syrups Mobile Application on Google Play.
Furthermore, this event will also offer attendees the opportunity to interact directly with the Unique Syrups creator, Chef Adrain, win door prizes, and taste his crafted drinks.
I do find your letter to be appreciative, but after a free lunch at the Government Center, my slim-down-for-swimsuit-summer diet won't let me consume luxury syrups.
