    For years, downtown Columbus was a place not many people were going, even in the daytime. The problem wasn’t public safety so much as just not enough reasons to go there.

Two Georgia institutions of higher education, one of them right here in Columbus, have launched college opportunity initiatives that should serve as models. There are no doubt other such programs in other schools around the state and the region, but these two strike us as particularly noteworthy.
