The short stretch of Hilton Avenue between Lookout Drive and Cherokee Avenue will be closed for three to four weeks beginning Tuesday due to storm sewer system work, according to Donna Newman, the city’s director of engineering.
“We’re upgrading a portion of a storm line through that area,” Newman said. “Where it originally went through several properties, we’re now taking it from one property down Hilton and putting it in the road to keep it from impacting those adjacent properties.”
Hilton serves as a connector between Macon Road in Midtown and Manchester Expressway at St. Francis Hospital. The road sees about 5,870 vehicles a day, according to the city’s traffic map.
Northbound traffic will be detoured right onto Lookout Drive, then left on Ethel Drive until it ends at Camille Drive, then left back to Hilton.
Never miss a local story.
Southbound traffic will be detoured left onto Edgewood Road, then right on Camille, right onto Lookout back to Hilton, according to the city memo.
Newman said she expects the project to take three to four weeks depending on weather and whether workers encounter anything unexpected.
“When you’re dealing with sections of town that are that old, you occasionally find things that no one had records of being there,” she said.
