Voting has begun in parts of Muscogee, Harris and Troup counties to fill the Georgia House District 129 seat vacated when Vance Smith was named commissioner of the Department of Transportation four months ago.

And there is not a big rush to the polls.

At midday Monday, nobody had cast an early ballot in Muscogee County, where there are about 7,400 registered voters eligible to participate. Early voting in Columbus began a week ago.

In Troup County, 31 voters had cast ballots, while 94 people had gone to the polls in Harris County, where the majority of the district’s voters reside and early voting started Oct. 5.

The four candidates vying to fill the unexpired term are Smith’s son, Columbus businessman Kip Smith; Columbus publishing consultant and former talk show host Jerry Luquire; Pine Mountain businessman Steve Earles; and former state representative and Harris County businessman Earl Davis.

Muscogee County Director of Elections Nancy Boren anticipates a light turnout in Columbus.

“Probably less than 5 percent,” she said Monday.

Only four of Muscogee County’s 48 precincts are involved in this election.

Those precincts, all located in the northwest part of the county, are Wynnbrook Baptist off River Road, St. Mark United Methodist on Whitesville Road, Northside Baptist on 54th Street and the Fraternal Order of Police lodge on Heiferhorn Way. While all of the register voters at Wynnbrook, St. Mark and Heiferhorn are eligible to vote in the race, only a portion of the Northside Baptist voters live in District 129, Boren said.

The four polling places in the district will be open only on election day.

In Columbus, early voting will take place this week and next at the county elections office in the East Wing of the downtown Government Center. The office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
