The first Fountain City Classic Career Expo and Job Fair takes place from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday at the Columbus Convention and Trade Center, 801 Front Ave.

And it appears the event is projected to be a big draw, with the Georgia Department of Labor saying Wednesday the number of employers attending is up from 60 to 70.

The agency has also secured 550 parking spaces in the city’s RiverCenter parking garage, 919 Front Ave., to handle the job seekers overflowing from the convention center’s parking deck. There will be no charge for parking there.

The Fountain City Classic is a football matchup pitting the Fort Valley State University Wildcats against the Albany State University Golden Rams. The game is 2 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

“In the 20-year history of this sporting event, we’ve raised some $2 million for scholarships for these two fine universities,” Calvin Smyre, chairman of FCC Inc., said in a statement. “By co-sponsoring this expo and job fair, the Fountain City Classic Inc. continues our tradition of investing in human capital and giving back to our local community as well.”

The event is also sponsored by the labor department and WTVM.
