LAGRANGE, Ga. — City officials received zero feedback on adult entertainment establishments during public hearings Tuesday night, before amending two ordinances pertaining to the establishments.
LaGrange City Council held hearings on two ordinance changes related to adult entertainment establishments, which did not garner any speakers.
The first change prohibits “sexually oriented businesses and adult entertainment establishments” in the city’s parkway overlay zone. The second change specifies the definition of adult entertainment establishments.
City Manager Tom Hall said both changes are routine measures and were needed to update the city code.
“Neither of these is in response to any pending issue,” he said.
While officials did not hear from the public on the routine changes, they did briefly address the restrictions placed on such establishments within the city limits. Officials noted the licensing of such establishments is restrictive.
“You can’t zone it out of existence,” said Jeff Todd, city attorney, later adding, “There are places available in the city, there has to be.”
The city does regulate what zones the businesses can be located in, as well as their distance from schools and neighborhoods.
LaGrange, which currently has at least one adult entertainment establishment located on New Franklin Road, isn’t alone in its regulation of such businesses.
Neighboring localities, including Columbus and Auburn, have some sort of ordinance, or ordinances, on the books defining the establishments and regulating where they can and cannot be placed.
The changes Tuesday evening were previously reviewed by council last month, but required a public hearings since they would be amending zone ordinances.
