Columbus fire officials say that one man is dead and another person is in the hospital being treated for smoke inhalation as a result of a house fire early Thursday on Estes Drive.

Ransom Farley, 49, was found in the home’s hallway. It appeared he was trying to escape the blaze, said Columbus Fire and EMS Deputy Chief Tommy Streeter.

Farley was pronounced dead at 3:08 a.m. by Muscogee County Coroner Bill Thrower.

It took fire officials about 20 minutes to extinguish the blaze, which started at 7 Estes Drive about 2:30 a.m.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, though faulty electrical wiring could be the culprit, Streeter said. Fire officials were working the scene into Thursday afternoon, the deputy chief said.

A third man, who was also in the house at the time of the fire, escaped uninjured, Streeter said.

This is the second time in two nights a house fire has claimed a life.

Tuesday night, 51-year-old Alfred Henry of 2512 Eighth St. was found dead in a front bedroom, which appeared to be where the blaze started.
