Spencer tops Carver for first Heritage Bowl win since 1998

Special to the Ledger-Enquirer\Darrell Roaden

In the 55th edition of the Heritage Bowl, Spencer turned heads for all the right reasons.

The Greenwave (1-0) broke an 18-game losing streak to Carver on Friday night. Spencer wide receiver Cory Calhoun was the hero for his squad, scoring three touchdowns in the 28-18 victory.

The 28 points for Spencer was its most against the Tigers since its 32-19 win in 1966.

The loss for Carver not only snaps their near-two decade win streak against their crosstown rival, but it leaves the Tigers 0-2 to start a season for the first time since 1998. Carver finished that season with a 3-7 record.
