MOBILE, Ala. — Chattahoochee Valley Community College completed a series sweep of Bishop State with 11-8 and 2-0 wins on Saturday, highlighted by a three-run homer by Kevin Putkonen and a record 15 strikeouts by Johnny Gunter.
In Game 1, the Pirates (28-12, 12-6 Alabama Community College Conference) went ahead 2-0 in the first and continued to build small leads but failed to pull away from Bishop State because of walked batters, CVCC coach Adam Thomas said.
CVCC walked in two runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut its lead to 7-6 before Putkonen homered to bring in three runs and make it a 10-6 game. Putkonen finished 2-for-5.
CVCC starter Derek Varnadore (4-2) earned the win after pitching five innings with 10 walks. Drew Freeman pitched three innings, allowing one unearned run and two hits while striking out four.
Never miss a local story.
In Game 2, Gunter (8-2) pitched seven innings, allowing two hits. His 15 strikeouts set a CVCC seven-inning game record of 14, which he set last month in a game against Jeff Davis.
Heath Peterson finished 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead the five-hit Pirates in Game 2.
CVCC next plays at Middle Georgia on Tuesday.
