The Arizona Diamondbacks selected Chattahoochee Valley Community College right-handed pitcher Jeff Shields in the seventh round of the MLB draft on Tuesday.
Shields, a Georgia signee who played high school baseball at Central Gwinnett, went 12-2 with a 1.60 ERA in his sophomore season at CVCC, struck out 98 and improved his velocity from the mid-80s to the mid- to low-90s.
Shields told the Ledger-Enquirer on Sunday that he would have to consider the offer before deciding to turn pro or go to Georgia for his junior season.
