ATHENS, Ga. — Former Columbus High golfer Jimmy Beck missed qualifying for the U.S. Amateur by one shot on Tuesday at the Athens Country Club.
Beck shot a 3-under 67 Tuesday in the second round and finished the 36-hole qualifier at 1-under 139.
He finished in a three-way tie for fifth. He will be the first alternate if someone can't make the U.S. Amateur, which will be played Aug. 12-18 at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass.
Augusta's Greyson Sigg shot a 68 and won the qualifier at 5-under 135.

Valdosta's Sam Straka shot a 69 and finished at 3-under 137. Lawrenceville's Zach Estep (67) and Augusta's Chase Parker (67) finished tied at 2-under 138.
Beck, who won the Georgia state amateur earlier this month, started the day tied for 18th.
Former Brookstone and current Columbus State golfer Cates Culpepper began Tuesday tied for fourth. He shot a 76 and finished tied for 26th at 5-over 145.
CSU's Robert Mize shot a 74 and finished tied for 36th at 7-over 147.
