CARTHAGE, N.C. — Columbus State took a lead into the back nine at the Peach Belt Conference Golf Championship, but could not hold off Clayton State, which had eight birdies on its way past the Cougars to claim the conference title.
CSU finished with an 871, five shots back and two ahead of third-place Georgia College.
Cougars senior Andrew Georgiou was in contention for the individual title until a double bogey on the par-3 13th and a bogey on the par-3 16th derailed his hopes. He finished with a 74 in the final round, tied for fourth. He was one of three CSU players to finish in the top 10. Stephen Paine shot a final-round 73 and finished sixth at 1-over par with a 217. Michael Hicks, who also shot a 73 Tuesday, finished tied for ninth at 4-over.
Clayton State’s Wade Binfield shot a 73 to edge teammate and PBC Player of the Year Will Wilcox for medalist honors.
