Auburn released the full terms of head football coach Gus Malzahn’s contract extension on Tuesday.
Malzahn officially signed the 7-year, $49 million extension to remain Tigers head coach on Jan. 26. Malzahn will make $6.7 million as Tigers head coach in 2018, a figure that will increase by $100,000 for the remaining six years on the contract.
Seventy-five percent, or $36.75 million, of Malzahn’s new contract is guaranteed. The contract is set to end after the 2024 season.
The new contract also lays out Malzahn’s buyout if he chooses to terminate the contract. Malzahn would be on the hook for $7 million if he leaves prior to Dec. 31, 2019. The figure drops to $5 million in 2020, $3 million on 2021 and $2 million in 2022. Following the 2022 season, the number drops to $1 million.
Malzahn earned $4.725 million in 2017, a year in which Auburn won 10 games. During the season, rumors circulated that Malzahn would leave for Arkansas, though Malzahn repeatedly denied them.
Malzahn now boasts a 45-22 career record in five years as Auburn head coach.
