The Auburn baseball team lost its top two signees in the last 48 hours. Altamonte Springs, Fla., shortstop Nick Franklin and LaGrange, Ga., catcher Luke Bailey both signed Major League Baseball contracts, according to Baseball America.
Franklin, the 27th overall pick in the first round, got a $1.28 million bonus from the Seattle Mariners. It is slightly higher than the commissioner office’s slotting guideline of $1,161,000.
Bailey, a fourth-round pick by the Tampa Bay Rays, signed a contract late Friday night for $750,000, four times the recommendation for his draft slot. It’s the second-highest bonus give out for a fourth-round player this year.
Auburn is still waiting to hear what will happen with two other signees — California junior college pitcher Drew Madrigal, an 11th-round pick by the Padres, and Jacksonville, Fla., high school pitcher Garrett Bush, a 15th-round pick by the Baltimore Orioles.
Teams have until midnight Monday to sign their draft pick.
