Auburn’s not going to let Alabama and Florida corner the market on commemorative statues.
Auburn athletics director Jay Jacobs announced in a letter to donors late Wednesday that the school will place bronze statues of the Tigers’ Heisman Trophy winners -- Pat Sullivan, Bo Jackson and Cam Newton -- on the east side of Jordan-Hare Stadium during the 2011-12 academic year.
The statues will be done by sculptor Ken Bjorge of Big Fork, Mont. He began planning the statues of Sullivan (the 1971 winner) and Jackson (1985) last spring and is now working on Newton, who won the award last December.
The statues will be one and a half times real size and will weigh about 1,900 pounds
Never miss a local story.
Auburn has also commissioned a bust of John Heisman, who coached at the school during its football program’s infancy from 1895-99.
