AUBURN, Ala. -- The final push to Wednesday’s national signing day could make or break Auburn’s 2012 recruiting class.
With less than a week remaining before most recruits sign their letters of intent, Auburn has only 15 commitments, the second-fewest in the SEC.
Seven of the Tigers’ top targets are expected to announce their decisions Wednesday, and a couple of top targets plan to make their decisions later.
Jordan Diamond, a four-star offensive lineman from Simeon High School in Chicago, plans to sign his national letter of intent Feb. 3, according to AuburnUndercover.com, and five-star wide receiver Stefon Diggs from Olney, Md., will not announce his decision until Feb. 10.
“The weekend after (Wednesday), I’ll be taking a visit,” Diggs said.
Diggs visited Auburn two weeks ago, and he made an official visit to Florida this week. According to the Orlando Sentinel, Diggs still plans to visit Ohio State and Maryland.
Two weeks ago, the Tigers hosted nine prospective recruits on official visits, but only Callaway tight end Ricky Parks made a visit last weekend.
Auburn is expected to host several recruits this weekend, but most of the Tigers’ work this late is being done by coaches on the road.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Thursday that Georgia is trying to flip four-star Sandy Creek wide receiver JaQuay Williams’ commitment from Auburn.
Wide receiver Ricardo Louis, a four-star from Miami Beach, Fla. who switched his commitment from Auburn to Florida State last week, has reopened his recruitment. He plans to announce on signing day.
The Tigers also are pursuing Cordarrelle Patterson, a junior college All-American who played at Hutchinson last year and is trying to decide among LSU, Auburn, Georgia, Mississippi and Arkansas.
On the offensive line, Diamond, Palm Beach Gardens (Fla.) tackle Avery Young and Alex Kozan still remain as top Auburn targets.
And that could make for a wild finish to the 2012 recruiting class.
“Georgia, Florida and Auburn are going to be interesting to see how they finish,” Rusty Mansell of 247Sports.com tweeted Thursday. “All three have a bunch riding on the last few days in recruiting.”
