AUBURN, Ala. — Tre Mason hasn't returned kickoffs for the last two weeks due to a heel injury.
He was also left off the two-deep at the position on Wednesday in favor of Corey Grant and Quan Bray. Head coach Gus Malzahn said it shouldn't be read into extensively, since Mason will continue to see time returning kicks in the near future.
"Last week he was a little banged up and we really didn’t know his status until we got out there," Malzahn said. "We got some other guys we feel very good about. He’ll be a part of (kick returns) moving forward."
Despite the reshuffling in the secondary following Josh Holsey's season-ending knee injury, Malzahn said there hasn't been any thought of moving Kiehl Frazier, now a receiver, back to safety. "We’ve got a plan and we’ll see what happens moving forward," he said. "Right now, Kiehl is playing on offense." ... Holsey's injury has also affected Johnathan Ford, who had started to get more reps at running back last week. This week, the true freshman practiced "more defensively" at corner after White moved to safety. "His reps have gone up because of that," Malzahn said of Ford.
