Editor's note: In the span of a year, Auburn has gone from worst-to-first in the SEC West. How did Auburn get to this point? Starting today and ending on the eve of Saturday's SEC Championship game, beat writer Ryan Black counts down the five biggest moments that have been woven into the Tigers' turnaround campaign.
Moment No. 5: Gus Malzahn returns, Nick Marshall signs
After a successful one-year tenure at Arkansas State, Malzahn returned last December to take the reins at Auburn, where he coordinated the Tigers' offense from 2009-11. With many pieces of the puzzle already in place offensively, all Malzahn needed was a quarterback.
He found it in Marshall, the junior college transfer who signed in February. Six months later, Marshall emerged as the victor in a four-way battle for the starting job in fall camp.
Never miss a local story.
Since then, Auburn's unbelievable plays and inconceivable endings have become commonplace.
And they can all be traced back to Malzahn's and Marshall's arrival on the Plains.
