NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — The question from an Austin, Texas newspaper reporter cracked up the 400 or so journalists attending a news conference by Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher Sunday morning.
"I don't know if you followed the Texas coaching search at all ..."
Even Fisher laughed.
Once Alabama's Nick Saban was out of the Texas picture, Fisher was one of the names that continued to surface as a possibility. That all ended Saturday when Louisville coach Charlie Strong, a former Florida assistant, was hired by the Longhorns.
"I went against Charlie a lot of years in the SEC and Charlie is an excellent coach, a very good guy and a good recruiter," Fisher said. "... I think you've got a very good coach."
Fisher feels for Bowden family
Fisher has been thinking about his former boss, retired FSU coach >b>Bobby Bowden. Bowden's grandson T.J. Bowden was killed in a Florida automobile accident the day after Christmas.
T.J. was the son of Jeff Bowden, who Fisher has also coached with through the years.
"I remember when T.J. was born," Fisher said. "We were together at Samford University. I go back with that family a long time, and it is a great tragedy."
Bobby Bowden is in Pasadena and Fisher saw him Saturday at practice.
