HOOVER, Ala. — Auburn didn't receive a single vote to win the Southeastern Conference last year at media days.
As the Tigers seek to repeat as league champions this year, media members think they'll have to overcome their arch-rival once more. Alabama was tabbed by media members as the front-runner to win the SEC this season with 154 points, followed by Auburn (75), South Carolina (32) and Georgia (19). LSU had nine votes, Ole Miss had two and Mississippi State and Arkansas had one each.
In the Western Division's predicted order of finish, the Crimson Tide received 1,915 points, with Auburn (1,735), LSU (1,453) and Ole Miss (1,069) next in line. Mississippi State (890) was picked fifth and Texas A&M (791) and Arkansas (351) rounded things out.
In the East, South Carolina (1,895) was dubbed the favorite, followed by Georgia (1,777), Florida (1,362) and Missouri (1,263). Tennessee (893) came next, with Vanderbilt (619) and Kentucky (395) in the cellar.
As noted by various conference coaches every year, SEC media members don't have a good track record with their preseason picks. In the 22 years reporters have picked a champion in the preseason, that team has only gone on to win four times.
