AUBURN, Ala— After taking a day off Saturday, Auburn went into full game week mode Sunday, and Ellis Johnson said it was readily evident on the practice field.
“You could kind of tell they were getting tired of preparing for whoever it was going to be, that ghost opponent down the road,” the defensive coordinator said following the Sunday session. “They’re finally going to get to play somebody this weekend, a real opponent.”
The veteran coach said the anticipation among the players has improved their preparation for Arkansas, Auburn’s first SEC opponent in a season opener since 1995.
After all, it has been almost eight months since the defending SEC champions played a competitive game.
“It’s just human nature, they’re much more excited, much more tuned in and much more alert, and ready to play somebody,” Johnson said. “The preparation seemed to be a little better.”
