AUBURN, Ala. — After sitting out last season following his transfer from Georgia, safety Tray Matthews finally got to make his first appearance in an Auburn uniform Saturday. And he made the most of it. The rising redshirt sophomore forced the A-Day game's only turnover, picking off early enrollee quarterback Tyler Queen in the end zone in the third quarter.
“It was an overwhelming feeling. I felt like it was a big relief," he said. "My parents were out there. Everyone knows how I am about my mom. If she’s happy, I’m happy. It was just a great feeling to be back out there in front of thousands of people and showcase my talents again on a positive side.”
But he let his emotions get the best of him, as he was assessed an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for excessive celebration. He then had to try to explain himself to his position coach, Travaris Robinson.
"He just asked what I did," Matthews said. "I just told him I thanked God for another opportunity.”
