AUBURN, Ala. — As Jeremy Johnson fought to become Auburn's starting quarterback this spring, he found a mentor in the form of one of the school's greatest players: Cam Newton. The former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback, back on campus to finish up his bachelor's degree, has been someone Johnson could turn to for insight.
There was one thing Johnson wanted to know more than anything else: Why? What is it that drives Newton every day?
His answer, according to Johnson, was "the most encouraging thing" he had ever heard.
'‘My why is I get up to be the best player to ever play this sport,'" Johnson recalled Newton saying. "After he told me that, I didn't want to hear nothing else because that was the most encouraging thing and motivation I heard in my life. I just use that same influence and that same mentality every day. I get up and just try to be the best player I can for this team and just for this whole entire program."
