Auburn hasn’t been shy about hinting it could play both its quarterbacks in the Birmingham Bowl Wednesday, but only one can start and that will be Sean White.
The Tigers announced White as the starter an hour before kickoff at Legion Field with the teams about to take the field for pregame warmups.
Coach Gus Malzahn said White was “close to 100 percent” earlier this week recovering from the left knee injury he suffered against Arkansas at the end of October.
In a 15-minute practice viewing window on Sunday, the Florida native moved around well going through individual drills with offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee.
White hasn’t started a game since Auburn’s 27-19 loss to Ole Miss and hasn’t played since the second half of a 20-13 loss to Georgia.
Malzahn expressed confidence in both quarterbacks at a press conference previewing the bowl game Tuesday.
“Both guys have had good practices since we have been here, it hasn’t changed,” Malzahn said. “Sean White is close to being 100 percent healthy and Jeremy Johnson is healthy. We feel good about both the guys.”
White is 2-3 as a starter this season with 1,064 yards with one touchdown to two interceptions while completing 57 percent of his passes (75 of 130).
