Bama’s Grant announces staff
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — New Alabama basketball coach Anthony Grant has retained Antoine Pettway and hired one of his own college coaches as assistants.
Grant announced Saturday that he will hold over Pettway from Mark Gottfried’s staff and has also hired John Brannen and Dan Hipsher, a Dayton coach during Grant’s playing days, as assistant coaches.
He named Tony Pujol director of basketball operations, James Kane basketball video coordinator and Andy Weigel strength and conditioning coach.
All but Pettway and Hipsher worked for Grant at Virginia Commonwealth.
Pettway returned to his alma mater last season. The former point guard helped Alabama make its only Elite Eight appearance in 2004.
Hipsher, a 29-year college coaching veteran, coached Grant during his playing days at Dayton and spent the past two seasons as South Florida’s associate head coach. He is a former Arkansas assistant and spent nine years as Akron’s head coach.
Brannon played for Grant when the latter was an assistant at Marshall and spent three seasons at VCU.
Pujol has spent five seasons in college coaching after leading Northwest Christian Academy in Miami to three state titles.
Kane and Weigel both spent the past two years under Grant at VCU.
