Wide receiver Rantavious Wooten sprains knee

ATHENS, Ga. — Dexter Morant’s on and off football career is back on again — and where it started.
Never miss a local story.
Three days after quitting the Georgia football team, Morant asked to return, and was accepted back.
Morant, a defensive end/linebacker, contacted coach Mark Richt on Friday to ask back. Richt said he consulted with defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, other coaches and the team’s seniors.
“Nobody wanted him to make a decision like that and have it really affect the rest of his life in a negative way,” Richt said.
Morant had wavered constantly before and after quitting, making two trips to and from his hometown of Manning, S.C. A commitment to football was the issue, according to Richt, who said on Wednesday that “football’s just not for everybody.”
But Morant began texting Georgia players later in the week to say he regretted the decision, and by Friday Richt was expecting a call from Morant to say he’d changed his mind.
“It kind of reminds me of a former Georgia player who I think it was during the (Vince) Dooley era, I was told, he went home six times and coach Dooley sent an assistant coach to get him six different times (and) bring him back,” Richt said. “He ended up being an All-American and played in a Super Bowl. I’m not gonna name names, but there’s a lot of that. That kind of stuff’s been going on for years, but nowadays that kind of thing gets more scrutinized than in the past.”
Receiver sprains knee
Sophomore flanker Rantavious Wooten, who was working with the first team, is out a couple weeks with a sprained left knee. Logan Gray, a converted quarterback, was working with the first unit Saturday.
Wooten’s injury could leave the Dogs down another starter for the first game. Projected starter Tavares King will be suspended. But Richt anticipates Wooten being ready for the Sept. 4 opener against Louisiana-Lafayette.
The same goes for senior linebacker Akeem Dent, whom Richt said has a “fairly realistic” chance of making the opener.
Dent had toe surgery in July but recently had the stitches taken out.
