ATHENS - Georgia is back in control of its own destiny ... for a national championship.
Both of the top-ranked teams in the BCS lost on Saturday night, within minutes of each other: Kansas was routed by Baylor, 52-24, and Stanford kicked a field goal in overtime to shock Oregon, 17-14.
What a night.
That means that in all likelihood Notre Dame will move up to No. 1 in the BCS standings that are released on Sunday evening. And then Alabama and Georgia will almost certainly be the next two teams. The order isn't certain, but it doesn't matter since the two will meet in Atlanta on Dec. 1 to decide the SEC championship. (Assuming Alabama doesn't slip up against Auburn on Saturday.)
Never miss a local story.
Georgia still has to beat Georgia Tech next Saturday in order to remain in consideration. And it figures to be a solid underdog to Alabama. Still, the amazing events of Saturday night turn a team left for dead after the South Carolina game into a team that has a real chance at the BCS championship game.
Georgia players were watching, and quickly registered their feelings via Twitter:
