ATHENS - The NFL draft is still more than four months away, but at this point it seems pretty safe to say that the Georgia football program will be mentioned often over those three days in late April.
Juniors Jarvis Jones and Alec Ogletree are expected to be first-round picks, and junior Kwame Geathers should be picked in the mid-to-late rounds. But in addition to that now six Bulldogs - more than any other team - have received invites to the Senior Bowl, which is considered the premeir postseason all-star game.
Cornelius Washington became the latest Georgia player to get a Senior Bowl invite. Washington, who played linebacker and defensive end for the Bulldogs, was announced as the sixth invitee on Thursday, and the fifth member of the Georgia defense.
The others previously announced are receiver Tavarres King, nose tackle John Jenkins, safeties Bacarri Rambo and Shawn Williams and cornerback Sanders Commings.
ESPN analyst Mel Kiper Jr. talked about the Georgia seniors during a teleconference on Wednesday.
"Commings, and Shawn Williams, and all those guys have been there - Bacarri Rambo - they've been the top safeties in the class pretty much all year. They get pushed down a little bit when you get to junior (prospects), but I still think Williams and Rambo and Commings, because of his versatility, could all still be in that third-fourth round discussion. We talked a lot about Jenkins as that space-eating, huge, tackle, who I think could be in that 20-25 area (of the first round). Right now I actually have him going 25 to Seattle."
Washington, according to Kiper, projects as a fifth-to-sixth round pick.
Kiper has Jones, an outside linebacker, going No. 5 overall to the Detroit Lions. And he has Ogletree, an inside linebacker, at No. 13 on his "big board" of top overall prospects.
"Ogletree has got the great versatility: He can play a lot of schemes, he can cover, he's gonna get bigger, he's got tremendous range, had a great year. I think he could certainly be in the top 10 to top 12. I've got him No. 13 right now. By the time the combine is over he could ascend into the top 10. So all those guys have a chance to be guys that we're talking about pretty early."
