A week from now, the fax machine will be rolling at the Butts-Mehre building in Athens, signatures of the 2013 signing class rolling in. The final class will be graded overall, each signing will be broken down and projected, and a few players will get prominently mentioned, a few others will be afterthoughts.
It's a fun exercise. But as we all know, it's not a science.
So as sort of a gentle reminder, we are counting down Georgia's top 10 recruits of the past decade (since the 2003 class), ranked in order of performance as a Bulldog.
And now we bring you No. 8:
RB TODD GURLEY
2012 signing class
Hometown: Tarboro, N.C.
High School: Tarboro High School
Star rating: Four stars across the board (Rivals, 247, Scout, ESPN.com)
Rankings: Ranked No. 78 nationally in the 247 composite, which culls all the major rankings. Ranked No. 42 overall by Rivals, No. 107 by Scout, No. 57 by 247, and No. 11 in the state of North Carolina by ESPN. ... Keith Marshall, who enrolled at Georgia a month before Gurley signed with UGA, was rated higher by all but Rivals, which had Marshall No. 48 overall. ESPN.com rated Marshall a five-star prospect, and No. 5 nationally. Scout.com had Marshall as a five-star prospect and No. 12 nationally. 247 had Marshall as a five-star prospect and No. 21 nationally.
Recruiting accolades: Named to SuperPrep all-Mid-Atlantic team.
Georgia career: Yes, we are projecting a bit here, judging Gurley on his first season. But it’s hardly a leap to project he will end up justifying this ranking. All Gurley did as a freshman, after starting the preseason fourth on the depth chart, was rush for 1,385 yards and 17 touchdowns, breaking Herschel Walker’s record for rushing touchdowns by a freshman.
And for the sake of comparison, we also reviewed the recruiting rankings of the past 10 years, and came up with the top 10-ranked players who signed with Georgia, according to how they were ranked at the time.
No. 10 was Alec Ogletree, rated No. 19 in the nation overall in the 2010 signing class, according to the 247composite.
No. 9 was Richard Samuel, rated No. 18 in the nation overall in the 2008 signing class.
And here was No. 8:
OT John Theus
2012 signing class
No. 16 in 247composite, No. 23 in Rivals.
