ATHENS - On the eve of signing day, the Todd Grantham-NFL job front has thickened.
Multiple reports out of New Orleans on Tuesday night stated that Grantham would interview with the New Orleans Saints on Thursday - the day after signing day - for that team's defensive coordinator job.
The New Orleans Times-Picayune first reported that Grantham would interview on Thursday, followed by Rob Ryan on Friday.
Then minutes later another reporter, Saints sideline reporter Kristian Garic of radio station WWL, tweeted that Saints head coach Sean Payton had himself informed Garic that Grantham would interview on Thursday, then Ryan on Friday.
Never miss a local story.
Meanwhile, ESPN reporter Adam Schefter reported that the Saints planned to hire Ryan. But that was contradicted by the Times-Picayune, which said no deal with Ryan was done.
If Grantham is going to interview, or even have any substantive discussions about another job, his contract calls for him to notify athletics director Greg McGarity. And as of 9:45 p.m. eastern time, Grantham had not done that, according to McGarity.
Previously, all of the reports about Grantham and the NFL had revolved around the Philadelphia Eagles, who still haven't hired a defensive coordinator. And for what it's worth, respected CBSsports.com reporter Jason LaConfora tweeted on Tuesday that he expects Grantham still to be in line for the Eagles job.
Grantham, as we said earlier, is supposed to be available to the media on Wednesday afternoon, as part of Georgia's signing day activities. We'll see then what Grantham has to say, assuming he follows through on meeting up. He did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment on Tuesday night.
