ATHENS - Whenever discussions have come up around here about this year's UGA pro day, the word that has invariably come up is "circus." And appropriately so.
Every NFL team is expected to be represented, either by a scout, general manager, assistant or perhaps even head coach.
Both the NFL Network and ESPN are covering it; the former is bringing analyst Mike Mayock, and the latter will have former Georgia star David Pollack offering commentary.
Numerous credentialed media members will be covering it, rather than our usual modest beat writer corps.
Never miss a local story.
Oh, and 19 players will be working out, including two likely first-round picks, a total of nine who are almost certain to be draft somewhere, and plenty more with a chance to be picked. Much of the interest stems from Jarvis Jones, who decided not to work out at the NFL combine in order to focus on this pro day.
Here's the full list of players who are participating:
This is expected to be a record year for Georgia players in the draft: The most the school has ever had picked in one year is eight, back in 2002. This year there are nine players who, if they don't go in the seven-round draft, it would be a shock: Commings, Geathers, Jenkins, Jarvis Jones, King, Ogletree, Rambo, Washington and Williams.
Brown, Gilliard, Abry Jones, Robinson, Samuel and Smith would all seem to have a chance to be picked as well, and at minimum get training camp invites.
(Richt is the only non-Georgia player participating in the pro day. The son of Georgia head coach Mark Richt is a former quarterback at Mars Hill, a Division II school.)
The festivities begin a little after 9 a.m., when players lift weights for the scouts, as well as perform the broad and vertical jumps. Then around 10:30 the players will move to a practice field for the shuttle, 40-yard dash and position drills.
And then players will break off to meet with any teams that want to interview them.
The event is closed to the public. But we'll be here to pass along the highlights, and our own interviews with players. Check here as usual for updates.
