Richt: Lorenzo Carter needs to be 'dynamic on all downs'
Until Lorenzo Carter improves against the run and in coverage, he'll be coming off the bench.
That’s at least what head coach Mark Richt said Sunday, a day after the Bulldogs defeated Vanderbilt 31-14 in Nashville.
Carter didn’t start the game and did not appear on the field during Georgia’s first defensive series. Carter’s first appearance came on the following defensive series and didn’t last long. Carter was flagged for a targeting penalty after a hit on Vanderbilt quarterback Johnny McCrary and was ejected from the game.
Outside linebacker Davin Bellamy earned the start for the Bulldogs and recorded three tackles and a quarterback hurry. Richt said Bellamy’s emergence in recent practices, combined with Carter’s need to improve his all-around game, were reasons why Bellamy started and Carter came off the bench.
“Davin’s been playing first and second down pretty good,” Richt said. “Lorenzo’s got to get better at that and he will continue to get better in that area. Lorenzo’s been a very good pass-rush guy. We just got to get him to be more dynamic on all downs.”
