Georgia's new head coach Kirby Smart talks about Alabama's 'Process'
At Alabama, it’s called "The Process."
It’s the system head coach Nick Saban developed after taking the Crimson Tide over in 2007. It has led to three national titles and a chance for another this postseason. It’s led to great on-field success, which is something Georgia would like to replicate.
On Sunday, Georgia officially hired Saban’s defensive coordinator Kirby Smart to be its next head coach, with hopes of joining the ranks of teams like Alabama.
Smart will certainly place his own mark when it comes to the brand of football he’ll instill in Georgia. But more than likely there will be elements of what he learned under Saban.
"'The Process' is hard work, that's what it is," Smart said. "It's hard work through commitment and doing things the right way. A commitment to excellence on the field, off the field, in the classroom, and every social aspect we have for our players. The only way you achieve that is by getting a great organization, a great support staff, surrounding yourself with great people and great coaches. That's what I hope to do here at the University of Georgia."
Smart said he’ll take his time when assembling his coaching staff, so a lot of what he wants to do with his version of "The Process" remains to be seen. To assist in his implementation, Smart has brought assistant Glenn Schumann to his Georgia staff from Alabama because, "He’s been a part of 'The Process' over there. He really knows 'The Process' and understands what I want."
After nine years as Saban's assistant at Alabama, Smart will utilize what he's learned in his first-ever head coaching job at Georgia.
"The only thing I can do is look forward," Smart said. "I've tried to assemble the best staff possible to go out and get as much depth and good players as we can in recruiting. Make sure those are the right kind of student-athletes that will make right choices and decisions when they get here. Then to get back here in January and get back to the grind assembling this team and making this team the best it can be."
